STATEMENT OF HDMA PRESIDENT AND CEO JOHN M. GRAY ON FEDERAL PEDIGREE AND PDUFA

ARLINGTON, Va., June 18 2012 – HDMA President and CEO John M. Gray released the following statement regarding federal pedigree and the PDUFA reauthorization legislation:

“HDMA is disappointed that an agreement was not reached to include a federal pedigree and traceability provision for pharmaceuticals in the PDUFA legislation. Healthcare distributors, along with other stakeholders, worked very hard over the last six months to reach consensus on a workable, uniform federal pedigree system. Such a system would have streamlined the current patchwork of state laws and regulations and enhanced the safety and security of the supply chain to the benefit of all patients. Without a national approach, our industry also faces increased costs to comply with the multiple, conflicting state pedigree laws. In an era of rising healthcare costs, the inability to achieve cost-effective federal preemption is a disappointment to all players in the healthcare supply chain.

“HDMA appreciates the significant efforts of Sens. Bennet and Burr to secure the pedigree and traceability language in PDUFA and we look forward to continuing to work with the Senators and the supply chain community to identify other legislative vehicles in the coming months to pursue a uniform federal pedigree system.”
